1. For this tutorial, we're going to use this funny picture of Nobu and Yasu (from Nana: the Movie), cropped from a screencap.

2. First, let's lighten it up. Duplicate the image twice and set each new layer to 100% Screen.

3. Good. Now it's much brighter, but not blindingly light. TIme to add color. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color. Use these settings (it might be wise to save the settings in case you want to use them again next time):

Reds
Cyan: -63%
Magenta: -38%
Yellow: +64%
Black: 0%

Yellows
Cyan: -58%
Magenta: -57%
Yellow: +100%
Black: 0%

Cyans
Cyan: -68%
Magenta: -87%
Yellow: +92%
Black: 0%

Neutrals
Cyan: 0%
Magenta: 0%
Yellow: -72%
Black: 0%

4. Now you have this.

5. Duplicate your first layer and move it all the way to the top of your layers palette. Set it to 100% Soft Light.

6. Finished! Here are more examples:

Helpful Tips:

  • Remember that your outcome varies, depending on the original coloring and lighting of the base. If your base was too light to begin with, duplicate it and set it to Multiply. If the colors turn out looking weird, try lowering the saturation of your base.
