In this tutorial, I will teach you how to make a simple icon textuer that has the watercolor look. You can apply these steps for bigger
textures as well.
1. Icons are generally 100 x 100, but for textures, I like to create them with bigger canvases first. So I made a new file that's
200 x 200 pixels.
2. Next, select your gradient tool and double-click the gradient bar at the top by the toolbar to edit the colors to whatever you want.
Then drag the gradient tool across the canvas and release your mouse. This is what I came up with:
3. Now I switch the colors back to the black and white default by pressing D. Go to Filter > Render > Clouds. Then go to Image >
Adjustments > Auto Contrast. Set this layer to 100% Soft Light. This is what I have:
4. Go to Filter > Brush Strokes > Spatter. Set the spray radius to 25 and the Smoothness to 15. This is what I have now:
5. Create a new layer and go to Filter > Render > Clouds and then Image > Adjustments > Auto Contrast.
Then go to Filter > Sketch > Note Paper. For Image Balance, change it to 24 and for Graininess and Relief,
make it 0. After you're done, Press Ctrl + I to invert your colors so your layer is now mostly black. Set this layer to 100% Soft Light.
6. Finally, go to Image > Image Size and resize it to 100 x 100. Duplicate this layer and go to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen. Set it to
60% Normal. Finished!
